Toxic Additives: Analysing Product Portfolio Risk

Emissions, Plastic, Financial Risk & Reward, Shareholder Engagement, Transparency & Traceability, Equity

The growing focus on the health and environmental impacts of plastics is a ticking timebomb for corporates using plastics and their investors. One challenge for investors in pricing in this risk is understanding how different corporates are exposed to potential risk from their product portfolios. This lack of transparency creates a blind spot for investors seeking to understand the risk to their portfolio companies.

In this report, we examined plastic additives and found that for 45% of the products analysed we could not determine their chemicals components. For a further 11% of products, we could determine the components, but there is currently no data on their potential harms. Where data on the component chemicals was available, 25% of the additives in our sample scored as in the most hazardous categories.
