Planet Tracker has released the third update of its Nature Scorecard. This reflects the latest developments in corporate biodiversity commitments and stewardship initiatives.

At the recent Biodiversity COP16 – see “The UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16): Takeaways from Planet Tracker” – the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) released an expanded list of early adopters.i It now includes a total of 502 companies, adding 157 new corporates to our dashboard. (Note that the Nature Scorecard excludes financial investors.) Among these, Professional & Commercial Services (32), Real Estate (24), and Software & IT Services (15) are the largest represented sectors, showcasing a diverse and growing interest across industries.

In addition, for the first time, Planet Tracker has incorporated Morningstar Sustainalytics’ Biodiversity and Natural Capital Thematic Stewardship Programmeii into our Nature Scorecard. This programme is a collaborative effort aimed at partnering with global investors to tackle biodiversity loss by engaging companies across the agricultural value chain. Targeting 50 national and multinational companies, the programme seeks to enhance issuers’ management of biodiversity-related risks and opportunities. Interestingly, most of these companies already appeared in earlier versions of the Planet Tracker Nature Scorecard, but there were 21 new entries. The largest sectors represented in this stewardship programme include Consumer Staples (29), Materials (5), and Consumer Discretionary (4).

While we have observed an increase in nature and biodiversity-related roles (e.g. Nature Officers), specifically within financial institutions, these positions have not been included in the current dashboard, as they are institutionally focused and outside the core corporate sectors we track.

These updates reflect the global uptake in corporate commitments to biodiversity and natural capital. We will continue to track these nature and biodiversity initiatives in the Nature Scorecard, so that it can serve as a vital resource for stakeholders monitoring the evolving landscape of biodiversity stewardship.
