From Catch to Cash: The Financial Case for Seafood Traceability
Nov 12, 2026 02:00 PM
Traceability gives seafood companies the ability to trace their products from ‘ocean to plate’. It is a necessary condition for seafood sustainability, helps tackle IUU and human rights risks, and allows a more efficient response when issues occur across the supply chain.
However, full chain, digital, interoperable traceability is not the standard for many companies, with many still relying on paper records and disconnected systems. Even when one company can trace its products, gaps elsewhere in the chain can prevent it from tracking seafood all the way back to its source. Mixing species or batches during handling and processing makes this harder still.
When used effectively, traceability can:
-
Reduce waste and improve efficiency
-
Enable faster, more targeted recalls
-
Support more responsible sourcing
-
Protect market access
-
Build customer trust
Companies that fail to invest in full-chain traceability risk leaving significant value on the table. Returns on capital are high, as the necessary capex is relatively low.
Our newest report, From Catch to Cash, puts the numbers behind the financial case for seafood traceability and calculates the financial implications of investing in digital, interoperable seafood traceability for four large, listed companies: Nissui, Umios, Thai Union and Nomad Foods. Our analysis found that improved traceability could generate an improvement in profit margins and could increase operating profits by between 2% and 9%, with the greatest potential gains at companies with more limited existing traceability coverage.
